To help ease the transition of moving, the Columbus Air Force Base Spouses & Friends will be launching a new initiative designed to provide service members and their families essential items they require when reporting to their first duty station or returning from a deployment.

These “Welcome/Household Starter Kits” will provide household and pantry items to junior enlisted members and officers. This initiative directly supports a key priority of Col. James Blech, 14th Flying Training Wing commander: Taking Care of Airmen and their families.

The process of a Permanent Change of Station, or PCS, is a regular part of military life, but it comes with a unique set of challenges. Families often arrive in a new town with their belongings still in transit, facing an empty house, and the immediate need to purchase basic necessities like cleaning supplies, paper towels, and simple food items. For junior members arriving at their very first duty station, this can create significant financial and logistical stress right at the start of their careers.

This new program is designed to bridge that gap.

“This effort aims to support morale, ease transitions, and strengthen connections within the community from the moment our members arrive,” said Lana Bonotan-Robles, president of the CAFB Spouses & Friends. “It reflects a broader message of support from the local community: ‘we're glad you're here and want to support you.’ A simple gesture like this can make all the difference, helping a new family feel seen, welcomed, and valued from day one.”

The kits will alleviate the immediate financial and logistical burden of setting up a new home, allowing Airmen to focus on their critical mission in Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training. When service members aren't worried about making a last-minute trip to the store for basic essentials, they can dedicate more mental energy to the demanding curriculum and rigorous flight training that defines the mission at Columbus AFB. This initiative sends a clear signal of community partnership and reinforces the Air Force's commitment to its people as its most valuable resource.

The CAFB Spouses & Friends, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is able to fund this initiative thanks to a generous $20,000 community grant that was awarded by a local organization.

The partnership highlights a shared commitment between the base and local community leaders to ensure the well-being of the nation's service members. It is the policy of the U.S. Air Force to not endorse any non-federal entity, and the Department of the Air Force had no role in the selection or award process for this grant.
