Installation Excellence Team visits Columbus Air Force Base Published Feb. 7, 2007 By Sonic Johnson 14th Flying Training Wing COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Columbus AFB is a finalist of the 2007 Commander-In-Chief 's Installation Excellence Award recognizing it as one of the top Air Force installations in the world. The award recognizes the outstanding and innovative efforts of the people who operate and maintain U.S. military installations. The base was selected for its outstanding contributions, improvement efforts and commitment to excellence of our Air Force people who operate and maintain our installations and support of the mission of the United States Air Force. CAFB earned $500,000 for being selected as a finalist and can earn another $500,000 if selected as the winner. The money will be used for quality-of-life projects on base. On January 22, 1985, President Ronald Reagan challenged the men and women of the Department of Defense to search for excellent installations. These installaions should exemplify doing the best job supporting their missions with the resources available to them and should have sought-out the most imaginative solutions to the many complex problems they face. The Department of Defense hosts an award ceremony in May following the competition year. This coincides with the military celebrations during that month: Armed Forces Week and Memorial Day. A trophy is given to each of the winners. In addition to the trophy, each recipient is presented an Installation Excellence flag and a letter signed by the President complimenting the men and women for their outstanding achievements.
