BLAZE Team helps during Day to Care Published Sept. 5, 2007 By Capt. Carolyn Jensen 14th Medical Operations Squadron COLUMBUS AFB, Miss. -- Fourteen BLAZE Team members volunteered to assist the United Way in helping out the Columbus community during the Day to Care Thursday. This year's theme was "community matters." Day to Care engages people from the community into "hands-on" volunteer projects. The purpose of the event was to provide contributors the opportunity to get involved with United Way and learn more about its agencies and to get involved in the community with community improvement projects. Due to Columbus AFB's ability to get more than 10 volunteers, the group was actually put in charge of two projects. The first was tiling the local Salvation Army chapter's 875 square foot Fellowship Hall. Ten volunteers prepped, cut and laid tile to replace the worn and stained carpet. The Fellowship Hall is a large gathering place for both internal Salvation Army events and community events. The second project involved four volunteers painting the Lowndes County 4-H Club conference room, which is used for a variety of purposes. At the end of four hours of hard work, the Columbus AFB volunteers gathered with Day to Care volunteers from across the city to attend the Day to Care luncheon at the Trotter Convention Center. After receiving thanks from both their individual projects' beneficiaries and United Way representatives the BLAZE Team members went back to base with a sense of accomplishment and a better understanding of the United Way.
