Remember cooking safety this holiday season

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S., in fact three in 10 fires occur in the kitchen; more than any other place in the house.

Moreover, the rate of unattended cooking fires rises during the holiday season.
The BLAZE Team is reminded to never leave the kitchen when something is cooking on the stove and always turn pot handles in towards the stove so curious children don't pull the pot down onto themselves; when possible keep the kitchen a "kid free zone." Wear tight-fitting clothing when cooking, as loose clothes can be readily ignited by hot burners. Don't store items on stovetop, as they can easily catch fire. Keep kitchen appliances clean and in good condition; make certain to turn them off when finished cooking. Keep a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen near the stove.

Should someone experience a cooking fire (1) put a lid on it; (2) if possible, turn the stove off; (3) do not attempt to move the burning material, it could spread the fire; (4) if fire is small and not spreading attempt to extinguish with a compatible fire extinguisher (5) evacuate your home, and; (6) call the Base Fire Department from a neighbor's home, even if you've extinguished the fire via 911.

Home fires and injuries are not presents anyone wants to get for the holidays. Common sense, a little imagination and a lot of wisdom can make for a holiday celebration that's not only enjoyable and festive, but also safe.

The Base Fire Department wishes you and your family a fire safe and happy holiday season.
