In December, a new aluminum fabricated slide gate was installed at the south entrance of CAFB.

A slide gate is a device used to control the flow of water and/or pollutants through storm water conveyances.

The slide gate was installed as part of a comprehensive Best Management Practice program. The slide gate provides a barrier that supplements existing containment infrastructure in case a fuel spill should occur. The south gate stormwater outfall receives discharges from 90 percent of the base surface water drains, including discharges from the Bulk Fuel Storage Area. The slide gate effectively protects the 6,100 sq mile local watershed which includes wetlands, endangered streams and a wildlife conservation area.
