New cell phone policy Published April 15, 2008 By 14th Security Forces Squadron Special to Silver Wings COLUMBUS AFB, Miss. -- The Department of Defense forbids motorist to utilize a cell phone while driving on a military installation except with a hands-free device. Holding a cell phone and using a speakerphone features does not constitute "hands-free;" the phone must not be in the hand. Effective immediately, the following penalties will apply to anyone found utilizing a cell phone without a hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle. The first offense the driver will be issued a warning. On the second offense, the driver's driving privileges will be suspended for 30 days. On-base driving privileges will be suspended for a year on the third offense. For subsequent violations, the 14th Mission Support Group commander will impose additional administrative actions as necessary. These requirements are outlined in the AFI 31-204, Air Force Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision, and the AETC Supplement to the AFI.
