Col. Sam Milam, Air Education and Training Command Deputy A2/3/10, spoke to Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Class 16-15 during their graduation Sept. 30 at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississppi.

Milam thanked everyone for allowing him to share his thoughts before starting his speech with lighthearted information.

Milam joked about young couples in the 80’s and 90’s were the cause of the newest pilots.

“I joke a little, but you all should be commended for what you did to develop these young officers before us today,” Milam said. “No one is born a patriot or a pilot. No one is born loving our country so much they devote a significant part of their life to its service. Those feelings and dedication came from you. Thank you all, you honor us with your presence today.”

Milam mentioned that the ceremony marked his 25th anniversary from his graduation from pilot training at Columbus AFB.

Milam moved onto a brief history of major events in U.S. history and how those event have raised the intensity of the training. He also mentioned that it’s not for everyone and that those who make it through are now “cool.”

“You have accomplished a great thing, you are part of an elite force of your country’s Airmen,” Milam said. “So by all means, for the next few days, bask in the moment. Let others work on their tan in the presence of your radiant awesomeness. You deserve it. Then do us a favor and get over yourself as your work has just begun.”

Milam brought up an event in his past where one of his instructor pilots helped save his life in a deployment. Milam became disoriented during a mission and heard a voice that reminded him what to do in the situation. Milam said he survived because of what that IP instilled in him during his training.

“That little voice may be the difference between a challenging mission, and a disaster,” Milam said.

Milam ended his speech by reminding the class to say “thank you” to their IPs, mechanics and loved ones for all their help and unmatched guidance.
