On Nov. 21, 24 members from Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Class 17-02 worked with Habitat for Humanity to frame a 1,200-square-foot house.
The officers constructed all of the framing for the four-bedroom, two-bathroom house under the guidance of local licensed contractors who spearheaded the construction effort.
In addition to helping a family in need, class members also gained valuable skills using tools such as an air nail gun, ram set gun, power saws, and also learned about the initial framing and layout of a house.
The woman that qualified through Habitat for Humanity lost her husband within the last year and has several children to care for. In order to qualify, she needed to meet certain financial requirements and take a course for homeowners, among other things. The materials for the house have been provided to her at cost and the house will be constructed through volunteer labor.
The family was present on Saturday to lend a helping hand to the building efforts and thanked the many volunteers that came out to help her family. The site of the new house on Tabernacle road in Columbus is a family-owned lot that was a favorite spot for her recently deceased grandmother.
The house is expected to be completed in late spring.
