As part of Public Lands Day, officially Sept. 27, Unit Environmental Coordinators from across Columbus Air Force Base took part in the annual Nature Trail clean-up by finding volunteers to help Sept. 15.

Thirteen people teamed up to clear brush around signs, widen the five trail head entrances, and even rediscovered a picnic table hidden in the brush.

Volunteers for the clean-up included:

41st Flying Training Squadron:
Ken Rogers

L-3 Logistics:
H.T. Ford Sr.

14th Civil Engineer Squadron:
Capt. Chad Fulgum, 2nd Lt. Danielle Frobish, 2nd Lt. Chris Valencia, Mike Jago, Kim Davis, Jamal Lewis and Bob Harmon

14th Force Support Squadron:
2nd Lt. Emily Bucher, 2nd Lt. Jamie Jovene and 2nd Lt. Sheila Butler

14th Medical Group:
Senior Airman Kwadwo Dankyi

The five-mile trail is divided into three interconnected loops. It is now ready for runners, hikers, walkers, cyclists, picnics and horses. It also has numbered stops and an interpretive book that identifies plants and points of interest for the Nature Hikers. For the very adventurous, there is a combined total of over 20 miles of low-speed road and trails to hike, run or bike.

If you missed the opportunity to volunteer for this event, fret not, there will be future opportunities to pitch in and discover the secret parts of Columbus, just ask your Unit Environmental Coordinator. Please enjoy and protect your trails on Columbus.
