Tiny paws pitter-pattered across the playpen as energetic puppies bounced from one person to the next, ready to shower everyone with endless cuddles and unconditional love. The Columbus Air Force Base Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Team joined forces with Southern Pups, a dedicated animal rescue organization, to host Hug-a-Pet event designed to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of connection to the Airmen and community members on base.

“We just wanted to bring joy, smiles, and compassion to the community,” said Darlene Hunt, 14th Flying Training Wing victim advocate. “You never know what’s going on in someone’s life, so we thought bringing these puppies on base might just be the break someone’s been needing.”

This special event featured a pet therapy session, where participants had an opportunity to break from their daily routines to cuddle and interact with rescue puppies. For Airmen who face the pressures of military life, moments of relaxation and companionship with animals can provide emotional relief and a renewed sense of positivity. The SAPR Team and Southern Pups recognize the importance of fostering a supportive and uplifting environment, and Hug-a-Pet is the perfect way to bring people together through the simple yet powerful act of bonding with animals.

“This is a nice thing to be able to come out and do. It gives everybody a moment of chill that’s needed cause things have been picking up after the holidays,” said Senior Airman Logan Snodgrass, 14th Contracting Squadron, specialist.

Following the pet therapy session, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a Healthy Relationships Class, a crucial part of the SAPR Team’s mission to promote respect, understanding, and strong interpersonal connections. This class covered key aspects of building and maintaining healthy relationships in all areas of life—whether in friendships, family, or romantic partnerships. The goal was to equip attendees with valuable tools and insights that can help them navigate personal and professional interactions with confidence and respect.

By combining the uplifting experience of pet therapy with an educational discussion on healthy relationships, Hug-a-Pet serves as more than just a feel-good event—it is a meaningful initiative designed to support the emotional well-being of the Columbus AFB community. Whether they were looking for a moment of relaxation or meaningful conversations, this event gave Airmen the opportunity to embrace joy, compassion, and personal growth.
