As the Air Force implements a renewed focus on standards within the ranks, Airmen at Columbus Air Force Base can rely on the Army and Air Force Exchange Service for their uniform and service dress needs.

The concept of open ranks dates back to the very beginning of the Army Air Corps before it transitioned to an independent service branch. The core principle focused on reinforcing professionalism, personal appearance and maintaining high standards of military bearing.

“We live in a climate where things are always changing, so being flexible, having an open mindset, and being proactive is a big part of what comes with the professionalism in the military,” said Master Sgt. Ashley Ishmon, 14th Flying Training Wing, Judge Advocate superintendent. “Open ranks can help us get back to the basics of what we represent when we wear this uniform, and how important it is to honor and represent the core values and standards we have in place.”

To help maintain these high standards of dress and appearance, Airmen can order their blues and uniforms at their local base Exchange or with the AAFES website which can be picked up in-store or delivered to your door. This gives service members the option to find exactly what they need in the right size, and pick it up hassle free, saving time and money.

Due to limited selection in store, and no on-base tailors; ordering online is the best option to get something that isn’t available in store. If tailoring is required, Marilou’s Alterations, located right off CAFB, specializes in providing alterations for dress and service uniforms.

“The Exchange has always been here to serve you while you serve us; if we don’t have something in stock, people can just fill out a customer request form here in store.” says the CAFB Exchange store manager, Janet Manders. “There are a lot more options online, where people can order their uniforms in whatever size they need, and have it shipped directly to us for pick up.”

Getting the right uniforms through the Exchange ensures Airmen honor the professional standards set in place. Wearing a properly fitted uniform not only represents the Air Force core values but also allows them to feel prepared and accomplished in their service.

“Open ranks inspections would help us with our professionalism in the military by ensuring we stay focused on the small details that matter,” says A1C Shaniyah Jackson, 14 Operations Support Squadron, Air Traffic Control apprentice. “When I look good, I feel good, so being confident and proud in the uniform we wear will boost our sense of responsibility, but all help us maintain the high standards expected of us Airmen in service.”
