COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- The cool morning air was not enough to dampen the holiday spirit at Columbus Air Force Base as families gathered at the Event Center for free Christmas Trees provided by Trees for Troops on Dec. 7, 2024.
The Trees for Troops program, organized by the Christmas Spirit Foundation, provides free, fresh-cut Christmas trees to current and retired servicemembers and their families in all service branches. The foundation provided 400 Christmas trees for the event at no cost to the installation or recipients.
“Military families often face unique challenges, such as separations due to deployments or being far from extended family,” said Gwendolyn Granderson, 14th Force Support Squadron community programs specialist and Trees for Troops project officer. “Providing a Christmas tree at no cost not only lightens the financial load but also adds a sense of tradition during the holidays. It’s a reminder that they are supported and valued.”
CAFB competed with 17 other Air Force installations to receive the donation. CAFB families were able to pick out their own trees and spend time together during a special visit from Santa Claus for the children.
“Looking after our Airmen and their families is very important, especially during the holidays,” said Capt Aaron Youngs, 14th Operations Support Squadron instructor pilot and Trees for Troops project officer. “Some of our members are deployed during the holiday season and taking care of their families is paramount to ensure they feel cared for by the community.”
The 14th Force Support Squadron event also provided horse and carriage rides, face painting, free brunch, and other entertainment activities for families.
“During this holiday season, it’s essential to take the time to connect with family and friends,” said Col. Jon Cato, 14th Flying Training Wing deputy commander. “Strengthening these bonds helps build resiliency and ensures we’re prepared for the challenges ahead.”
