Don't Wait Until the Last Minute to File Your Taxes Published April 10, 2009 By Airman Elena Stofle 14th Flying Training Wing Judge Advocate COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Ok, procrastinators, April 15h, the last day to file your taxes, is fast approaching. And with the free services offered by the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center on base, why wait? Appointments at the CAFB Tax Center, located in the base post office, will fill up soon - so act fast! You will need to bring these verification items to the Tax Center to file your return: · Proof of identification · Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents, and/or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration · Birth Dates for you, your spouse, and dependents on the tax return · Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers · Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099) · A copy of last year's Federal and State returns if available · Bank Routing Numbers and Account Numbers for Direct Deposit (Blank checks will have this information also) · Total paid for day care provider and the day care provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security Number and address or the provider's business Employer Identification Number) · To file taxes electronically on a married filing joint tax return, both spouses must sign the required forms. · Specific knowledge as to whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent · All other Form 1099's and 1098's · House closing statement if you sold a home last year or if you have bought a home in 2008 or 2009 · Listing of potential itemized deductions for medical, taxes, charitable deductions and/or interest payments · Total Economic Stimulus Payment received in 2008 The VITA Tax Center will be open until 7 p.m. from April 13-15. In addition, the Tax Center will remain open until April 3oth for those taxpayers who need amended returns or to file late returns. Those taxpayers who will not be able to file their taxes by April 15th will need to file an application for an extension of time; the Tax Center can assist you with this as well.
