Lt. Col. Jon Moore took command of the 14th Student Squadron during an assumption of command ceremony at the BLAZE Hangar on Dec. 2.

The 14th STURON, which had been deactivated for nearly 20 years, will be taking on many of the responsibilities it had before it was re-designated as the 14th Operations Support Squadron in 1991.

"Starting up a new squadron from scratch gives a new commander freedom to shape it from the ground up. It also gives provides great challenges since there's no recent history to build on," said Col. Steve Stater, 14th Operations Group Commander who officiated the assumption of command. "The new commander doesn't get a nice big continuity book on how to handle personnel, finance and the multitude of issues a commander handles every day."

Moore, who was last the director of operations for the 37th Flying Training Squadron, was the perfect candidate for the challenge said Stater.

The 14th STURON was activated on Nov. 1, 1946 as the 14th Airdrome Detachment in Atkinson Field, British Guiana and was inactivated on July 28, 1948. Nearly 25 years later the squadron was reactivated at Columbus Air Force Base as the 14th Student Squadron on July 1, 1972. The squadron provided support to Undergraduate Pilot Training to include ground and simulator training and academic instruction. Inactivated and later reconstituted and re-designated as the 14th Operations Support Squadron Dec. 9, 1991. Now the 14th STURON returns to continue it's long history.
