The 14th Flying Training Wing was awarded the Environmental Hero award March 2 in the Capitol Rotunda for being the top state/government recycler of the year from the Mississippi Recycling Coalition.

Col. James Fisher, 14th FTW Vice Commander; Col. Anthony Sansano, 14th FTW Mission Support Group Commander; Allen Reed, 14th Civil Engineer Squadron Installation Management Flight Chief; Michael Jago, 14th CES Environmental Chief; and Mike Blythe, 14th CES Qualified Recycling Program Manager and Installation Biological Scientist, traveled to the Mississippi State House in Jackson to accept the award.

State Senator Charles Younger joined the Columbus Air Force Base delegation for lunch prior to the ceremony.

The Mississippi Recycling Coalition plans to inform and educate the membership, members of government, the Mississippi community, and the general public of the economic and environmental significance of source reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting through activities such as meetings, conferences, seminars, publications, curriculum, and other professional development means. MRC promotes the development of recycling industries in Mississippi that collect and process recyclable goods for use as raw material and promotes the purchasing and using of products that include recycled content.

In 2016, CAFB recycled over 295 tons of material. The base recycles cardboard, white and mixed paper, scrap metal, glass, plastic #1 and #2, and batteries. All Columbus AFB employees are encouraged to recycle. Drop off bins outside of the recycling center are also available for 24- hour use to encourage 24/7, 365 recycling.
