This week, the city and county schools have agreed in spirit to allow base residents the choice to attend Columbus city schools or Caledonia schools. The timeline for implementation is the end of August.

Lowndes County school district will be offering tours of Caledonia Elementary, Middle and High schools Monday. Lowndes County Schools will provide bus transportation, departing from the Columbus Club, for tours lasting approximately two hours. The first bus will leave at 10 a.m. and a second at noon.

To streamline the transition, all base housing residents will be provided with a survey. The intent of the survey is to determine a parents schooling preference for their children. If residents do not have children, then only the first question needs to be answered.

These surveys are anonymous and will be used strictly to anticipate logistical hurdles associated with exercising this new option and to prepare each school for changes in attendance. Completing the survey does not obligate a parent to a school choice.
Additionally, the survey will also address home schooling needs.

After completing the survey, residents are asked to return it to one of the three convenient drop boxes located at the Base Exchange, Library or Fitness Center by Tuesday. For more information, call 434-7096.
