The Columbus Air Force Base Commissary revealed a new addition to its lineup of products and services provided on May 7.

A sushi bar, which is located next to the produce section, will offer freshly made sushi to customers as well as party platters and trays.

From the famous California Roll to the more exotic sounding, Crunchy Dragon Roll, the bar will offer a vast variety of sushi options for customers to check out.

"Customers can call ahead and place customized orders," said La Vida Nethercutt, Commissary store director. "We want customers to know that the sushi is freshly made every morning and that customers can customize their orders to their liking."

Patrons can pick up their food at the sushi bar or place a specialized order by calling the deli at 434-7100 extension 6. Fresh premade food selections will be available every day when the Commissary opens its doors.

"It's a fantastic, healthy option for the military workers and ID card holders on base to have a new place to eat," said Chief Master Sgt. Vance Kondon, 14th Flying Training Wing Command Chief. "We don't have a dining facility on base, so along with places such as Subway and the Columbus Club, the sushi bar provides more food options on base."

The sushi bar was introduced in a ceremony complete with a ribbon cutting and a cake cut by a traditional Japanese sword. Samples of a crunchy sushi roll were handed out to Commissary patrons to give them a taste of the newly available product.

Not a fan of fish? There are other options such as the vegetable roll, vegetable wrap or a spicy chicken salad roll.

"The sushi bar is a celebration of the partnership between the Defense Commissary Agency and Team BLAZE," said Col. Scott Frickenstein, Commander of the 14th Mission Support Group."This service was made in response to customer feedback.

"When the option for a sushi bar came to us we sent out the memo," said Frickenstein. "Feedback came in piles; we got around 200 letters in support of a sushi bar."

The sushi is provided by the Advanced Fresh Concepts Franchise Corporation. The AFC's mission is to provide time-conscious consumers with a diverse selection of unique meal solutions to sustain a healthy lifestyle and improve their quality of life through continuous product innovation and development.
