Hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. Although Columbus AFB is located 196 nautical miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, it is in an area commonly affected by tropical systems. This season began early with the first tropical storm named on May 9. This year is again forecasted to be another above normal year for hurricanes.
